Daniel in Babylon (2004-2005)


0:00 - 1:56: 2-year-old Caleb riding his toy on his Granny’s driveway in Provo, Utah. 1:57 - 13:52: Caleb trick-or-treating with my former girlfriend, Kimberly. 7:02 - Caleb dumps his bucket, throws his candy, and runs away. 13:54 - 16:46: Fort Bliss, Texas, with Sergeant Brooks. Getting ready to deploy to Iraq. 16:47 - 18:26: Staging area in Kuwait, waiting to fly north to Iraq. 18:27 - 26:10 (November 10th): Marine Corps birthday inside Saddam’s palace on Camp Victory, Baghdad, Iraq. 26:11 - 30:36 (End of video clip): Cutting my fingernails while I talk to the camera outside my tent. Jake is goalie. 1:19 - 4:05: Tour of our work trailer/area, including Sergeant Brooks with our fly trap, Kevin (pronounced Keevin), Sergeant Rabias, Tony (linguist), and Jake (linguist, and to this day a close friend of mine). 4:06 - 4:43: The burn barrel. 4:44 - 8:16: Driving around Camp Victory. 8:17 - 12:55: Throwing a football with Jake while Sergeant Brooks comments on the surroundings. 12:56 - 16:50: Talking to Caleb (my then-little nephew) in Spanish while drawing pictures on the whiteboard. 16:51 - 18:30: Talking to Caleb in English this time. 18:31 - 19:20: Driving a little car around the office for Caleb. 19:21 - 21:30: With my good friend, Chris Green. 21:31 - 22:54: Watching the Super Bowl (“super” early in the morning) inside the Camp Victory chow hall. 22:55 - 24:48: Camp Victory chow hall with Jake, Sumaia, and Sergeant Brooks. 24:50 - 27:30: R&R (Rest and Relaxation) in Qatar. 27:31 - 29:01: Wally (linguist), Al Pacino (linguist), and Sumaia (linguist and still a close friend) in the work trailer. 29:01 - 29:55: What happens when it rains in Baghdad. 29:56 - 33:21: Arm-wrestling with Wally, then Jake and Wally, then Sergeant Brooks and Jake. 33:22 - 39:35: Convoy to Forward Operating Base (FOB) Falcon. 39:36 - 41:19: FOB Falcon. Getting ready for incoming detainees and materials from a raid. 41:20 - 53:09: Return convoy from FOB Falcon to Camp Slayer. 53:10 - 1:09:04 (End of video clip): Exploring one of Saddam’s former swimming pools and Saddam’s son’s former zoo with Al Pacino. “The Zoo” - new linguist in-processing area.
